چکیده

In this paper we attempt to physically interpret the Modal KochenSpecker (MKS) theorem. In order to do so, we analyze the features of the possible properties about quantum systems arising from the elements in an orthomodular lattice and distinguish the use of “possibility” in the classical and quantum formalisms. Taking into account the modal and many worlds non-collapse interpretation of the projection postulate, we discuss how the MKS theorem rules the constrains to actualization, and thus, the relation between actual and possible realms.

Many worlds and modality in the interpretation of quantum mechanics: an algebraic approach

Many worlds interpretations (MWI) of quantum mechanics avoid the measurement problem by considering every term in the quantum superposition as actual. A seemingly opposed solution is proposed by modal interpretations (MI) which state that quantum mechanics does not provide an account of what ‘actually is the case’, but rather deals with what ‘might be the case’, i.e. with possibilities. In this...

A topological study of contextuality and modality in quantum mechanics

Kochen-Specker theorem rules out the non-contextual assignment of values to physical magnitudes. Here we enrich the usual orthomodular structure of quantum mechanical propositions with modal operators. This enlargement allows to refer consistently to actual and possible properties of the system. By means of a topological argument, more precisely in terms of the existence of sections of sheaves,...

The Contextual Character of Modal Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics

In this article we discuss the contextual character of quantum mechanics in the framework of modal interpretations. We investigate its historical origin and relate contemporary modal interpretations to those proposed by M. Born and W. Heisenberg. We present then a general characterization of what we consider to be a modal interpretation. Following previous papers in which we have introduced mod...

Strong Kochen-Specker theorem and incomputability of quantum randomness

The Kochen-Specker theorem shows the impossibility for a hidden variable theory to consistently assign values to certain (finite) sets of observables in a way that is noncontextual and consistent with quantum mechanics. If we require noncontextuality, the consequence is that many observables must not have pre-existing definite values. However, the Kochen-Specker theorem does not allow one to de...

Modal Interpretations and Relativity

Modal interpretations of quantum mechanics posit that the state vector obeys linear, unitary evolution at all times, and supplement the state vector with a set of possessed properties sufficiently rich to account for the occurrence of definite events at the macroscopic level, including definite outcomes of experiments, but sufficiently restricted so as to avoid a Kochen-Specker contradiction. T...
